The Summit at Dolpo's Edge
Putha Hiunchuli, Dhaulagiri VII, stands where Nepal's trails run out and the country falls silent — a genuine glacier summit in one of the Himalaya's least-walked corners.
01 — DOSSIER FACTS
Where the Dhaulagiri range ends, the old Himalaya begins.
Putha Hiunchuli closes the great wall of the Dhaulagiri Himal at its western end, the seventh and last of its numbered giants, looking out over the high desert of Dolpo. It was first climbed in 1954 by Jimmy Roberts and Ang Nyima Sherpa, in the era when reaching a mountain was half the expedition, and in that respect little has changed: the approach still winds through Dolpo's roadless valleys. The climbing is honestwhere long snow slopes to a true 7,000m summit, among the most reasonable peaks of its height in Nepal. What it demands instead is self-sufficiency. Thamserku has organised nineteen expeditions to Putha Hiunchuli since 1996 which is one of the deepest operating records on this mountain held by any house.

Putha Hiunchuli Expedition Highlights
Putha Hiunchuli is among Nepal's most promising 7,000m ski objectives, first climbed in 1954, with a skiable summit profile and lines that reward careful snowpack reading.
An approach through Dolpo, one of Nepal's least-visited regions, with a sense of exploratory travel and pristine landscapes that the central Himalayan ranges no longer hold.
IFMGA/UIAGM-certified lead guides with extensive high-altitude experience, supported by a dedicated 1:1 personal climbing Sherpa ratio from Base Camp to summit and return.
A clear progression of high camps that supports acclimatisation alongside ski logistics, with built-in time to assess snowpack, pick lines, and plan descents carefully.
Five-star Kathmandu hotel before and after the climb, comfortable lodges through the Dolpo approach, and heated private tents with full amenities at Base Camp.
Comprehensive medical kit, emergency oxygen backup, standby rescue Sherpa team, helicopter contingency framework, Leave No Trace policy, and guaranteed gratuities and bonuses for crew.

07 — ROUTE
From Kathmandu to the summit. 5 points on the line.
The NE Face line broadly echoes the original 1954 ascent, with broad snow slopes and consistent angles highly suitable for ski descents. Camp placement and descent strategy draw on Thamserku's own summit ski history.
The Dolpo approach provides natural altitude gain. A dedicated acclimatisation day at Kaag Kot, plus staged high camp rotations, build readiness for both the summit push and the ski descent.
October provides the post-monsoon window. Ski descent conditions depend on snowpack assessment — our guides evaluate snow quality at each rotation before committing to the descent plan.
"Quiet answers, before you write to us."
At the far western end of the Dhaulagiri range in Nepal's Dolpo district — which is why it is also catalogued as Dhaulagiri VII. It is among the most remote 7,000-metre peaks commercially climbed anywhere in Nepal.
Strong ski mountaineering proficiency and prior 6,000m+ climbing experience are recommended. We assess each applicant's combined climbing and skiing resume.
No. The descent is planned and supported, but conditions on the day determine whether a ski descent is feasible. Safety is always the priority.
The northern approach through Dolpo provides natural acclimatisation and access to Putha Hiunchuli's best ski terrain — the broad, consistent northern slopes.
Thamserku's expeditions include a 1996 summit ski descent led by Francois Tripard and a 2000 snowboard/ski descent. This experience directly informs our route and camp strategy.
