Past the Trekking Peaks
The highest mountain in Nepal's far west, in country so far off the expedition map that whole seasons end with no one on its summit. Few peaks this size are this untouched.
01 — DOSSIER FACTS
Between the peaks you have climbed and the giants you intend to.
Baruntse is where the expedition question gets answered: not just can you go high, but can you live high — weeks in a remote valley, rotations from a glacier Base Camp, weather decisions that matter. The mountain climbs a fine snow ridge to a genuine 7,000-metre summit ringed by Everest, Lhotse, and Makalu; the journey to reach it, over the Mera La into the upper Hunku valley, is among the wildest approaches of any commercial peak in Nepal. Thamserku first operated Baruntse in 1988 and has organised 45 expeditions here since. Most pairing Mera Peak as the acclimatisation climb, two summits in a single committed journey.

07 — ROUTE
From Kathmandu to the summit. 5 points on the line.
The South-East Ridge is the classic line — first climbed in 1954. The Mera Peak ascent is not a warm-up but a structured 6,476m summit that provides the altitude foundation for Baruntse's ice cliffs and sustained slopes.
Mera Peak provides the acclimatisation foundation. The traverse from Mera to Baruntse Base Camp maintains altitude while building technical readiness. Custom rotation schedules with supplemental rest days.
October provides the autumn window. The South-East Ridge's ice cliff near 7,000m demands good conditions — we monitor carefully and commit only when the route is stable.
"Quiet answers, before you write to us."
Prior 6,000m climbing experience is preferred. Solid crampon work and rope management are essential for the South-East Ridge's ice terrain.
Moderately technical — a sustained snow ridge with some steeper sections — but its real demand is the remoteness and the full expedition rhythm at 7,000 metres. It is a serious step up from trekking peaks, by design.
Mera provides structured acclimatisation at 6,476m — altitude adaptation and technical confidence before the main Baruntse objective.
Baruntse does not typically require supplemental oxygen. Emergency backup is maintained at all times.
After descent from Baruntse to the Base Camp area, a helicopter takes you directly to Lukla, saving days of trekking and reducing post-expedition fatigue.
